Parts that Make Up Your Exhaust System
Your car’s exhaust system plays an important part in your car’s day-to-day operation. So, what parts make up the exhaust system?
- Muffler. This part is what most people think of when they picture an exhaust system. A muffler dampens the sound produced by the engine while maximizing the flow of gases being dispersed by the vehicle. Not only does this part help make your car quieter, but it also improves fuel efficiency as well.
- Tailpipe. Often conflated with the term “muffler,” the tailpipe is located right behind the muffler and directs airflow away from your car.
- Exhaust manifold. This piece collects exhaust from each cylinder and directs emissions towards the muffler.
- Catalytic converter. This device takes the raw exhaust from your engine and uses specialized metals to mitigate their harmful effects.
