Hatchbacks and Sedans

To start, it’s useful to understand the Mercedes-Benz system for naming. The letter or letters in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle’s name refers to either the size or segment of the vehicle, and the number to the engine or power output. Other distinctions typically break down by vehicle trim.

The lines start at the beginning of the alphabet and become more powerful and luxurious as you go. For sedans and hatchbacks, you’ll first find the C-Class, which is often considered an “entry-luxury” line. Next comes the E-Class for comfort, space, and new high-tech features, and finally the S-Class for maximum luxury.

SUVs

The SUV naming breakdown is very similar. The only true difference is that the model names start with G, a reference to the original German word for cross-country or off-road vehicle. The line starts with the GLA, then followed by the GLB, GLC, GLE, and GLS, which is considered the full-size flagship model. You also have the option of the G-Class, which is a luxury off-road vehicle.

Additional Models

There are a few other naming conventions to account for in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. S models outside of the above typically refer to roadsters and sports cars, and EQ models are exclusively electric. There are also distinctions for AMG® and Maybach vehicles.
