Are You Ready for California REAL ID?

The REAL ID deadline is right around the corner, leaving many California drivers confused and a little overwhelmed. Since we don’t want our friends and neighbors caught off guard, Keyes European is here to help with a closer look at the rules, regulations, and requirements.

What is a REAL ID?

REAL ID is a type of identification that goes beyond traditional requirements for driver’s licenses and state IDs. It has been in the works for several years, but as of May 7, 2025, you’ll need it to fly domestically or access federal facilities. If you do not have a REAL ID by the deadline, there are several other forms of ID that you can use to fly, including a passport or passport card. You can determine if you have a REAL ID by looking for a star symbol in black or gold. Enhanced Driver’s Licenses and identification cards are acceptable alternatives, but are currently only available in five states.

How Do I Get My REAL ID?

The good news is that getting a REAL ID is simple, and much the same process as getting a driver’s license in a new state or for the first time. The only difference is that you’ll need to bring more proof of ID. Every state will have different requirements for accessing a REAL ID – you can find the California REAL ID requirements online – but you’ll need your full legal name, date of birth, social security number, and one or more proofs of address.
