Mercedes-Benz EV terminology

AC

AC, or alternating current, is the type supplied by standard household outlets.

Charging

Replenishing your electric vehicle’s battery with electricity.

Charging Station

Any location where EVs can be charged. There are both in-home and public charging stations.

DC

DC, or direct current, is a type of power supplied by EVs’ batteries to their electric motors.

EV

An EV, or electric vehicle, like the EQS by Mercedes-Benz, is a vehicle powered by an electric motor.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle

A hybrid vehicle like the Mercedes-Benz AMG® GLE 63 S 4MATIC®+ SUV relies on an internal combustion engine and one or more electric motors to propel it. Its electricity is derived from a battery charged by the engine and/or through regenerative braking.

Level 1 Charging

Level 1 charging uses a 120-volt connection found on most household outlets. These typically supply about five miles of range per hour.

Level 2 Charging

A Level 2 charger can be professionally installed at home. Additionally, most public chargers are Level 2 chargers, and can usually fully charge a vehicle in under 12 hours.

Level 3 Fast Charging

Also known as DC Fast Charging, this is the fastest way to charge an EV. Because homes cannot be wired for this level of output, Level 3 chargers are only found at public charging stations. By way of recompense, they can typically fully charge a vehicle in less than half an hour.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Also known as PHEV, a plug-in hybrid combines a traditional hybrid powertrain with a larger lithium-ion battery. This allows it to charge itself on the go (like a hybrid), but it can also be recharged at a Level 1 or Level 2 charger.

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)

This feature lets EVs communicate with the power grid, managing power transfer in both directions and preserving battery life.
